SERVICES

Clinical Services

The vagad vision eye care were basic diagnosis and treatment for all the common eye disorders, mostly relating to the anterior segment of the eye. The General Ophthalmology department is the first place where patients who come to the hospital with an unknown eye problem are directed. Basic Vision screening and diagnosis is done here and the patient is examined by the Ophthalmologist and the treatment advised. If any specialized treatment or further analysis needs to be done, the patient is referred to a specialty clinic.

School Screening

Uncorrected refractive error is the major cause of visual impairment in children. As per estimates, every minute a child looses vision somewhere in the globe, yet they are treatable and curable due to different reasons like lake of awareness and socio-economic factors, Vision testing in children is the process of detecting vision problems and is undertaken to improve prognosis and reduce disability. Children form one of the main age groups requiring attention to refractive errors because of the high prevalence of myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism. The ultimate molding of a person’s personality and potentiality rests with his nature, surroundings and quality of eye sight. The school going years are formative for children in determining their physical, intellectual and behavioral develop ment. Poor vision in childhood affects performance in school and has a negative influence on the development and maturity. Further, most school children do not realize that they are suffering from the ocular disability as they adjust to poor eye sight in different ways. They compensate for their poor vision by sitting closer to the blackboard, or by holding their books close to their eyes. They may also squeeze their eyes. They may also tend not to undertake any work that needs visual concentration, thus affecting their performance.

Community Eye Screening Camps

Camp organizers play an important role and oversee all activities right from crowd management to the transportation of patients in need of cataract surgery to the base hospital. The organizer also works with the medical team to ensure that the required medicines, instruments, spectacles grinding sets and frames are transported to the camp site.

In a small camp 200-300 patients will be screened, a medium sized camp will see around 500 patients and a large camp will draw over 800 patients.

As a general rule of thumb, organizers expect operable cataract numbers to be 25% of their out patient load. Depending on the size of the camp the requisite number of medical personnel are assigned. In an vagad vision camp 1 doctor with 3 paramedics, 1 counsellor and 2 opticians screen 200 patients. The success of each camp depends on a large extent on community participation, effective publicity and the experience of the camp organizer.

Over the years the camps conducted by vagad vision have gradually adopted a more comprehensive approach. Today they not only screen for cataract but for other common eye diseases as well. At these camps patients detected with conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, etc. are provided with a referral ID card that they are to carry with them to the base hospital for further medical intervention and management.

The screening process at an eye camp is carried out in a step-by-step manner as follows:

  1. Step 1: Registration
  2. Step 2: Visual Acuity Test
  3. Step 3: Preliminary Examination
  4. Step 4: Duct and Intraocular Pressure Examination
  5. Step 5: Refraction
  6. Step 6: Final Examination
  7. Step 7: Counselling
  8. Step 8: Optical Dispensing Services
  9. Step 9: BP Recording for Cataract Patients
  10. Step 10: Admission of Cataract Patients and Transportation to Base Hospital
